The BTEC Foundation Diploma in Art, Design and Media Practice is described as one of the strongest and most distinctive Foundation programs, which will enable you to develop the skills and the portfolio that is required for most degree programs in Art and Design.

The various creative projects you undertake at Freshart College, will allow you to experience a range of ideas, materials, processes and technologies, enabling you to consequently identify and explore your preferred degree with the support of our experienced staff. Students find this course exciting, challenging and rewarding.

The qualification is intended to be delivered through two main phases: an initial exploratory phase, and a final confirmatory phase. The time frames for these phases is deliberately flexible to accommodate diverse needs:

  • Exploratory Phase – learners experiment with diverse media, materials, techniques and processes across specialist skills areas. They should investigate progression opportunities and develop a portfolio of work to support existing practice and progression while developing towards a specialist area of practice.
  • Confirmatory Phase – learners produce a final major project and draw upon the summation of knowledge and skills acquired during their learning. They should be encouraged to extend personal ambition whilst understanding the professional context for presenting their finished work.

Content areas taught throughout the year:

  • Investigation
  • Experimentation
  • Evaluation and review
  • Realization
  • Communication
  • Self-directed practice

During the program, students will learn the value of seminars and lectures, time-management, prepare their proposals and evaluate their performance. They will have personal tutor and many technical workshops available to attend.

Whilst studying students will have the opportunity to have access to excellent facilities including: a Digital Media Centre, Photography studios and Darkroom, Fashion and Architecture studios, Wood/Metal workshops and other professional equipment.

The pathways covered in the Foundation Diploma include Fine Art, Graphic Design, Animation, Illustration, Fashion and Textiles, Art Photography, Product Design, Interior Design and Architecture.
